“I look at things and immediately consider alternative ways that colors and shapes can bring about changes in texture and meaning. I measure almost everything before I paint: grid lines, margins, key points or shapes. I spend hours running through color combinations and compositions.

The geometry gives me something to push against, but the actual work lives in living with the misalignments—a line where the tape pulled away unevenly, an accidental bleed, a rough patch in the gesso, or a weird, off-kilter shape that throws the symmetry off. I’m not interested in clinical perfection. I want the tension of a rigid setup fighting against the fact that a person with two hands made it.”

Chaz Thomas is a self-taught, New Jersey-based painter working in geometric abstraction, using deliberate color relationships and sharp structural lines to translate concepts into physical form.
